A man was killed and set ablaze by a mob in Ilisan Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, after allegedly attempting to steal a motorcycle.

The victim, who remains unidentified, was reportedly part of a two-man gang that attacked a motorcyclist of northern origin in a bid to snatch his bike.

While the man was beaten to death and burned, his alleged accomplice, dressed in an army uniform, escaped into a nearby building after being stabbed. The situation escalated as a mob of over 200 youths gathered, demanding the release of the fleeing suspect.

According to Ilisan Development Association Chairman Wemmy Osude, the situation became increasingly tense, requiring the intervention of soldiers and police from the Sagamu Area Command.

In a dramatic rescue operation, soldiers evacuated the suspect amid a shootout, during which stones were thrown, and vehicles were damaged.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Army 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, Captain Idereghi Akari, confirmed the incident, clarifying that the soldier involved was not a thief and that the deceased was a civilian.
