  • Then Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and the G-5 governors had demanded Ayu’s removal for superintending over Atiku’s emergence as candidate.
  • The group had insisted that the North could not produce a presidential candidate and National Chairman at the same time, urging Ayu to step aside.

Terhile Utaan, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship, has denied allegations that he played a role in the removal of former National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu.

According to Utaan, his decision to take Ayu to court was a brave move aimed at saving the party from chaos and confusion.

The party had been embroiled in a crisis since the 2023 presidential primary, which saw Atiku Abubakar emerge as the candidate.

Governor Nyesom Wike and the G-5 had demanded Ayu’s removal, citing the need for regional balance in leadership positions.

The controversy ultimately led to Ayu’s ousting as National Chairman.

In a meeting with Tiv ethnic group leaders, Utaan explained that the party was in disarray when Ayu’s ward claimed to have suspended him.

He stated, “I did not remove Dr Iyorchia Ayu…

“I went to court to seek clarification on the party’s constitution. My actions were courageous and necessary to save the party.

“My decision to go to court was a sacrifice for the party’s well-being.”

He emphasized, “I aim to bring the party together and return power to the people.

“We must reunite our leaders and work towards a common goal.”
