  • The National Economic Council gives Kwara, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kebbi, and FCT a September 9 deadline to submit reports on state police
  • Failure to submit reports will bind these states to NEC’s decisions regarding the establishment of state police without their input

The National Economic Council (NEC) has given Kwara, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kebbi, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) a six-day deadline to submit their reports on the proposed establishment of state police. Failure to meet this deadline will result in these states being bound by any decisions made by the NEC without their input.

This directive was among the outcomes of the NEC meeting held on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima. In February, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized the push for state police, following recommendations from state governors to address rising insecurity across the country.

Acting Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, highlighted that while most states have already submitted their reports, Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and the FCT have yet to do so. He stressed that these states have until Monday, September 9, to do so.

Lawal also noted that establishing state police was a critical discussion point, given the ongoing security challenges in various regions, including the Northeast, Northcentral, Southwest, Southeast, and South-South.
