The Federal Government has announced plans to construct a “super grid” to address the frequent national grid collapses. Bolaji Tunji, media aide to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday following the minister’s remarks at the China-Africa Cooperation Summit.
Adelabu criticized the current state of the national grid, stating it is inadequate to support the country’s power sector vision. “The strength, capacity, and age of our existing network cannot support our vision for the power sector, hence the need for the construction of the Western and Eastern super grid,” Adelabu said.
He added that the initiative, which has been under consideration since he took office, has President Bola Tinubu’s full support. The super grid is expected to improve transmission, stabilize the grid, and expand its capacity and flexibility. Adelabu further revealed that 90% of the required approvals are in place.
The Chairman of Geometric Power praised Adelabu for reviving the project. Nigeria has experienced over five grid collapses in 2024, causing widespread blackouts.
