Federal Government warns of potential flooding in 21 states amid heavy rainfall

NEMA emphasized the need for states to prepare for potential flooding to prevent further loss of lives and property

The Federal Government has warned of potential flooding in 21 states, including seven high-risk states—Benue, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa—due to five days of rainfall from September 4-8, 2024.

Communities downstream of River Benue have been urged to take precautions, while the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) advised clearing blocked drainages, constructing temporary flood barriers, and evacuating from flood-prone areas.

NEMA emphasized the need for states to prepare for potential flooding to prevent further loss of lives and property. Residents were also urged to stay informed through weather updates and cooperate with local emergency services.
