A catastrophic flood has once again swept through communities in Yobe state, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, according to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The disaster struck Fune local government area, claiming four lives and injuring 43 others, SEMA disclosed.
In its latest flood update released on Tuesday, SEMA revealed that the devastating flood had a profound impact on the affected communities.
“1,978 households and an estimated 7,639 individuals from different communities and villages across the 13 wards of Fune LGA were severely affected by the disaster,” SEMA stated.
SEMA added that the flood resulted in the destruction of approximately 1,215 homes and injured 43 people, with four fatalities recorded.
The worst-hit areas included Jajere, Ngelzarma, Bindigi, Ngelshengele, Baushe, Kolere Kafaje, Tello Dumda, and Kayeri.
SEMA further said that Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni had directed immediate assistance to the affected households, while also initiating a process to assess the impact on farmlands.
In a related development, the News Agency of Nigeria reported that the collapse of the Alau Dam’s water channels had forced numerous residents of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, to abandon their homes.
A NAN correspondent who visited the affected areas reported that key locations, including parts of the Shehu of Borno Palace, Maiduguri Central Market, and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, were submerged underwater.
Other areas severely impacted by the flood included the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Maiduguri Zoo, College of Nursing, College of Agriculture, and School of Health Technology, among others.
Meanwhile, Usman Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, advised residents to follow designated evacuation routes to ensure their safety.
