The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the homicide section of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to take over the investigation into the alleged killing of AbdulQoyum Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, by police officers last Wednesday.

The officers involved in the incident are Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip. All three are attached to the Department of Operations, Kwara State Police Command, and have been detained in connection with the incident.

In a letter with reference number CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/230, dated September 9, 2024, and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Inspector General of Police described the incident as “sad and unfortunate.” He expressed condolences for the grief and loss caused by the act and assured the family and the public that justice would be served.

The President of the polytechnic’s Student Union Government (SUG), Comrade Saheed Ishola, representing other students, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the police on Monday, demanding that the identities of the officers involved in the killing be revealed. He warned that failure to do so would result in a “ceaseless peaceful protest” in the state.
