Muktar Betara, a representative in the lower chamber parliament from Borno, has given N100m to help those affected by the floods in his state.
Betara is the elected representative for the Biu, Bayo, Shani, and Kwaya, Kusar areas in Borno.
Reports indicated hat at least 37 lives have been lost and over 400,000 people have been forced to leave their homes due to the heavy rainfall that caused the Alau Dam to break.
Betara, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), presented the donation to Borno’s governor, Babagana Zulum, during a visit to assess the damage in Maiduguri.
“I want to donate N100 million on behalf of myself, my family, and the people I represent to support those affected in Maiduguri,” he said.
“Your Excellency, I offer my condolences to you, the state government, and all those affected by this tragic flood, which took the lives of our loved ones.”
“The flood has left thousands without homes or livelihoods. May God comfort us and grant the deceased a peaceful rest.”
“I also commend you, Your Excellency, and your team for supporting those affected and for your previous efforts to help those in need across the state.”
Before the National Assembly resumes from its break, Betara promised to bring attention to the flood’s impact on his constituents.
“I will make sure to bring this flood disaster, which is a major humanitarian crisis, to the attention of the House as soon as we return from recess.”
