Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya has provided N50 million to support those affected by flooding and insurgent attacks in Yobe’s Mafa Local Government Area.
In a statement on Friday ,Mamman Mohammed, the Gombe governor’s spokesperson, described the community’s “double tragedy attack” as a heartbreaking and regrettable incident.
Yahaya, represented by Deputy Manesiah Jatau, explained that the donation aims to aid victims of the Mafa insurgency attack and statewide flooding.
“We share your grief over the community attack and floods that claimed lives, destroyed homes, and farmlands,” he said.
“The N50m donation supports the state government’s efforts to assist victims.”
Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni praised Yahaya’s support during the state’s difficult time.
“I’m deeply grateful for Gombe state’s show of sympathy and brotherhood; we appreciate this support and care,” Buni said.
Buni emphasized that global security challenges require collective cooperation to overcome.
PRIOR INCIDENT
On September 2, Yobe police spokesperson Dungus Abdulkarim reported that suspected Boko Haram insurgents looted and burned shops and houses in Mafa village, Tarmuwa LGA.
Abdulkarim stated that the gunmen killed an unspecified number of people and left Arabic-inscribed fliers.
A letter in Arabic revealed the group’s motive, citing alleged military ties as justification.
On September 3, Zagazola Makama reported that the attack occurred during Magrib prayer, with gunmen firing into the gathering.
Makama said 34 worshippers were killed, and multiple explosives were laid on the path to the village.
Days later, the Yobe state government conducted a mass burial for the casualties, attributed to the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Additionally, Mohammed Goje, SEMA executive secretary, reported that 1,650 houses in Jajere and Yunusari communities were destroyed by floods.
Goje stated that 413 households were displaced by flash floods from heavy rainfall.
An assessment of flood disasters in Yusufari, Wagir, Mutai Chirokusko, Bade, and Potiskum towns is ongoing.
