41 feared dead in Zamfara boat accident, survivors rescued

Only 12 people, including the boat's captain, were rescued alive

At least 41 people are feared dead following a boat accident in Gummi town, Zamfara State, on Saturday. The boat, carrying 53 farmers to their fields, capsized in the early hours of the morning, according to eyewitness Abubakar Muhammad.

Muhammad reported that only 12 people, including the boat’s captain, were rescued alive. “We did our best to save them, but tragically, 41 passengers perished,” he said.

The Sole Administrator of Gummi Local Government Area, Alhaji Na’Allah Musa, confirmed the accident and attributed it to overloading. He explained that the boat’s captain had warned passengers about the excessive weight, but they refused to disembark.

The Emir of Gummi, Justice Lawal Hassan (rtd), expressed his condolences, calling the incident “tragic” and praying for the victims’ families.

Rescue efforts are ongoing to locate missing passengers.
