Building collapse in Benin City traps UNIBEN students, rescue operations ongoing

A storey building collapsed during heavy rainfall on Saturday morning in Benin City, Edo State, trapping several University of Benin (UNIBEN) students.

The incident took place on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, an area predominantly occupied by students.

A student, speaking anonymously said that a university rescue team managed to save some of the trapped students, though many sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

“One victim is still trapped under the rubble and has been communicating from inside the building, pleading for help. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate and extract them,” the student said.

The Dean of Students from UNIBEN is reportedly on-site, overseeing the rescue operation with the university’s team.

As of the time of this report, the university management has not released an official statement on the cause of the collapse or the number of people affected. Rescue efforts are still underway.
