Suspected Vandal Electrocuted at Transformer Substation in Yobe State

The Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) confirmed that their Regional Manager and Operation and Maintenance Officer visited the site to assess the situation

A man suspected of attempting to vandalise power infrastructure was found dead inside a transformer substation at Commissioners’ Quarters in Damaturu, Yobe State, on Saturday morning.

Residents discovered the body on their way to the mosque for morning prayers and immediately reported it to the police. A patrol team from “Operation Haba Maza” evacuated the body to the Damaturu Teaching Hospital, where it was later identified and claimed by the suspect’s family.

The Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) confirmed that their Regional Manager and Operation and Maintenance Officer visited the site to assess the situation. According to YEDC’s Communication Officer, Blessing Tunoh, the suspect had used his shirt in an attempt to shield himself while tampering with exposed live wires, leading to his instant electrocution. However, no further damage was reported to the transformer.

The Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, revealed that the suspect likely attempted to steal power assets during a power outage but was electrocuted when power was unexpectedly restored. The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to working with YEDC to protect power infrastructure from vandalism and prosecute offenders.
