  • On Friday, Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Group, donated N1.5 billion to the flood victims.
  • Muktar Betara, a member of the House of Representatives, also contributed N100 million to alleviate the flood disaster.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged N100 million to support flood-affected residents in Maiduguri, Borno state.

Thousands of residents were left homeless after floods ravaged Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin areas of Maiduguri on Tuesday.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the devastating flood has claimed over 30 lives and displaced more than 400,000 people in the state capital.

In response, the Borno government has established internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the state.

Speaking in Maiduguri on Sunday, Atiku described the situation as “a monumental disaster that has not been witnessed before in the history of this state.”

“The purpose of our visit today has already been announced by the Master of Ceremony. I want to let you know that whatever affects Borno, also affects me,” he said.

“It is in that capacity, therefore, Your Excellency, that we have come here with my delegation as mentioned or announced to commiserate with you, the government, and the good people of Borno State.

“This is a monumental disaster that has not been witnessed before in the history of this state.

“Of course, it is a time of rebuilding because that is what follows immediately after such disasters, and you are not alone in that.

“We want to let you know that we are all partners as well as rebuilding the life of the people of Borno State in general as concerned.

“Therefore, I want to announce my own contribution to the taking of Borno State to the tune of 100 million naira.

“I would appreciate details of where that money can be made into.

“And, of course, finally, we pray for the repose of the souls of those who have died. May Almighty Allah grant them eternal rest and peace.”
