Ahead of the commencement of petroleum distribution from the Dangote Refinery, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has deployed over 300 trucks to the refinery. This move is part of preparations for lifting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from the facility.
In anticipation of the increased traffic that will follow the movement of these trucks along the Lekki-Ajah-Epe corridor, the Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to manage the expected surge in traffic by deploying additional traffic personnel.
The Federal Government had earlier announced plans for the distribution of PMS from the Dangote Refinery. NNPCL would initially act as the sole buyer and be responsible for distributing fuel to other marketers.
NNPCL confirmed via a statement on its X (formerly Twitter) account, “In preparation for the Dangote Refinery’s scheduled petrol loading on Sunday, September 15, 2024, NNPC Ltd. has been mobilizing trucks to the refinery’s fuel loading gantry in Ibeju-Lekki. By the end of today, at least 300 trucks will be stationed at the refinery’s fuel loading gantry.”
In response to concerns about potential traffic congestion, the Lagos State Government has implemented a comprehensive traffic management plan to ensure smooth movement along the Lekki-Ajah corridor. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, confirmed that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has been equipped with advanced technology and additional personnel to manage traffic efficiently.
In collaboration with stakeholders, the state government has also mobilized tow trucks and emergency response equipment to handle traffic-related incidents. Medical ambulance services are on standby for rapid response in case of emergencies.
Giwa stressed the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations, particularly for tanker operators, to prevent disruptions during loading and movement. The Lagos State Government will enforce these regulations to maintain smooth traffic flow.
Commercial bus operators are also advised to comply with traffic laws, avoid picking up passengers at undesignated stops, and observe all road signs and signals. Compliance with these regulations is expected to ensure an efficient transportation system during this period of increased industrial activity.
