The assailants, suspected to be part of an armed proscribed group, stormed the station in the early hours of Monday

Gunmen attacked Umunze Police Station in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday, killing two police officers.

The assailants, suspected to be part of an armed proscribed group, stormed the station in the early hours, using improvised explosive devices and firing sporadically, according to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

“Two police operatives on duty lost their lives during the gun battle as they attempted to resist the attackers,” Ikenga said, adding that their bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue.

Joint security forces, including the Police, Nigerian Army, Navy, and other agencies, have since recovered five unexploded improvised devices and are pursuing the suspects.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the scene for an assessment and urged anyone with information on the attack to come forward, assuring confidentiality.
