Gunmen in three SUVs stormed the Njaba Divisional Police Headquarters in Imo State, southeast Nigeria, on Sunday evening, opening fire on the facility.

According to the state police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, officers at the station repelled the attackers, resulting in the deaths of three gunmen. The remaining assailants, who sustained gunshot wounds, fled into nearby bushes.

The police suspect the attackers were members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.

Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, is leading an ongoing operation to track down the fleeing suspects. During the operation, security forces recovered a general-purpose machine gun, an AK-47 rifle, and three vehicles: a Toyota Lexus 470, a Mercedes GLK, and a Toyota Venza.
