A fatal road accident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge, resulting in one fatality and eight injuries, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
On Monday, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency’s spokesperson, released a statement providing details of the incident.
Taofiq explained that the accident happened when two commercial buses, with license plates LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH, “recklessly engaged in a high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele.”
The swift response of LASTMA officials enabled the quick rescue of eight passengers, who all sustained severe fractures, according to the spokesperson.
He emphasized that this incident highlights the devastating effects of reckless driving.
“The injured were immediately transported to Gbagada General Hospital for urgent medical care, courtesy of the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS),” the statement reads.
“Police units from Bariga and Alonge Police Stations played a crucial role in maintaining order and facilitating the rescue efforts,” the statement continues.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety and appealed to drivers to adhere to speed limits, while offering condolences to the bereaved family and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
In another incident, a Honda CRV overturned on the Third Mainland Bridge near Unilag waterfront due to excessive speeding, but fortunately, no lives were lost.
The agency’s personnel promptly cleared the wreckage, ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow on the bridge.
