Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, responded to a recent comparison between him and former U.S. President Donald Trump made by Temitope Ajayi, a media aide to President Bola Tinubu. Ajayi had drawn parallels between Trump and Obi, suggesting both leaders use negative rhetoric to describe their countries to energize their supporters.

In a statement released on Sunday, Obi, through his media office, dismissed the comparison as a desperate attempt to undermine his credibility. He accused the presidency and its allies of distorting facts to damage his reputation.

The statement, signed by Ibrahim Umar, Obi’s spokesperson, called the comparison “laughable” and described it as part of a larger effort by “desperate propagandists” to link Obi with Trump to distract the public from Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges. Obi’s team also criticized the government’s anti-people policies and asserted that these comparisons were an attempt to cover up the hardship inflicted on Nigerians by the current administration.

Obi reiterated his commitment to working for the good of Nigeria and dismissed rumours that he was aiming for a lesser role in government, such as the Vice Presidency, which he has consistently denied.
