Persons with Disabilities Call for Improved Access to Infrastructure and Education

Chris Agbo, Secretary-General of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), urged the government to allocate funds to support the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria have raised concerns over the lack of accessible infrastructure, education, and supportive policies that hinder their quality of life.

They voiced their frustrations on Wednesday during the unveiling of a mural by SightSavers Nigeria at the Area One roundabout in Abuja, ahead of the upcoming Summit of the Future at the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

Despite the signing of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act in 2019, which mandates the removal of barriers for PWDs, the implementation of the law remains a challenge.

Chris Agbo, Secretary-General of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), urged the government to allocate funds to support the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities and ensure the full enforcement of the law.

The Summit of the Future will take place on September 22-23 at the UN Headquarters in New York, focusing on sustainable development and inclusivity.
