The Nigeria Police Force has warned vigilantes, private security personnel, hunters, unaccredited media, and election observers to avoid Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Frank Mba, who oversees election security, delivered the message during a press briefing in Benin. He assured voters that comprehensive security measures had been implemented to ensure their safety throughout the election.
DIG Mba emphasized that the police, in partnership with the Army, Air Force, Navy, DSS, and other security agencies, are fully prepared to guarantee a peaceful and orderly election.
“We assure the people of Edo State of a violence-free election with a level playing field for all candidates. Anyone who breaks the law will be dealt with,” he said.
While the police are not responsible for conducting the election, Mba clarified that they have to maintain peace and order. He also warned against carrying items that could be used as weapons, such as walking sticks or umbrellas and displaying political party symbols near polling stations.
Mba urged journalists to verify information before publishing, stressing the need to avoid spreading false news that could trigger violence or disrupt the election.
