On Thursday, the Senate proceeded with the second reading of a bill proposing the creation of a specialized security outfit to combat illegal mining activities in Nigeria.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Mohammed Onawo (Nasarawa South), outlines the formation of the Mine Rangers Service, a specialized unit responsible for safeguarding mining operations. The unit would also enforce mining, environmental, and safety regulations while promoting sustainable mining practices.
During his presentation, Senator Onawo highlighted the security outfit’s importance in curbing illegal mining nationwide. The unit would investigate mining-related accidents and ensure compliance with mining laws.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) supported the bill, emphasizing that the security outfit would help Nigeria recover the $18.9 billion lost annually to illegal mining activities.
Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, also expressed support, stating, “This proposed law is crucial because it will help identify and address the criminals involved in illegal mining operations.”
