Flood: Sultan, NSCIA Praise Federal Government for Disaster Relief Fund

NSCIA Commends Federal Government's Disaster Relief Fund, Advocates for Proactive Measures in Disaster Management and Prevention

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has commended the federal government for establishing a disaster relief fund. Recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the fund is designed to provide swift and effective support for disaster victims nationwide.

Prof. Salisu Shehu, NSCIA Deputy Secretary-General, welcomed the initiative on Friday, noting that while overdue, it is a positive and necessary development. He emphasized the need for proactive disaster management alongside the relief efforts.

“We believe this is a step in the right direction. Beyond disaster management, the government should establish a dedicated department focused on disaster prevention, equipped with the necessary tools to minimize, if not completely prevent, future disasters,” Prof. Shehu stated.

He added that this initiative will help shift the focus from reactive measures to more proactive and pre-emptive strategies for disaster prevention.

Meanwhile, in response to the recent flood in Maiduguri, which submerged 70% of the city and displaced over a million residents, the Borno State government has opened a dedicated Flood Relief Account to support affected victims.

The NSCIA called on Nigerians and international supporters to contribute to the relief efforts through the following account:

Borno State Flood Disaster Relief
Bank: Zenith Bank
Account Number: 1313556361

Prof. Shehu also encouraged those in positions of influence to make significant interventions to help those in need.
