  • Anambra last held LG election in 2013 in the twilight of the Peter Obi administration.
  • Successive administrations in the state have installed caretaker committees to oversee the LGAs.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has secured a sweeping victory, winning all 21 chairmanship seats in Anambra state.

This victory follows the elections conducted by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) across all Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state on Saturday.

Notably, this marks the first Local Government Area (LGA) election in Anambra state since 2013.

Before now, the Labour Party (LP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) expressed concerns about the situation, with some parties boycotting the process.

According to ANSIEC Chair, Genevieve Osakwe, APGA secured a landslide victory, capturing all 21 LGAs and 326 wards in Akwa during the recent polls.

“This is a significant victory for the party, showing that APGA is at its strongest state in Anambra,” the party said after the election.

“While other parties were in disarray and none could field Candidates for up to 50% of the positions, APGA is the only party that fielded 100% of candidates for all positions, and campaigned as if its survival depended upon the election.

“The party’s success demonstrates the strong support of the Anambra electorates, reaffirming their pact with APGA.

“The election outcome is a testament to APGA’s strength at the grassroots level, with the party’s candidates emerging victorious in all 21 local government areas and 326 wards.”
