- The Peoples Democratic Party urged the APC-led government to reduce fuel prices and stabilize the Naira amid rising economic hardship
- PDP criticized the APC for undermining democracy and called for a review of policies that have caused suffering among Nigerians
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to immediately reduce fuel pump price and address the Naira’s declining value. This call was made as part of the PDP’s message to mark the 2024 Independence Day Anniversary.
In a statement on Monday, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, urged Nigerians to use the occasion to rekindle the spirit of nationalism and defend democracy against what the party describes as “emerging totalitarianism” imposed by the APC administration.
The PDP condemned what it sees as the APC government’s efforts to undermine the Constitution, silence citizens, and compromise democratic institutions, effectively turning Nigeria into a “fiefdom” where APC leaders behave like rulers and treat citizens as subjugated people.
The PDP also emphasized that Nigeria is an independent nation and that sovereignty belongs to the people, urging the APC government to review and reverse policies that have caused hardship to the population.
The party called for an immediate reduction in fuel pump prices and the stabilization of the Naira by redirecting resources to revive the struggling productive sector.
According to the PDP, the true essence of the Independence Day celebration goes beyond symbolic parades and speeches. It emphasizes that it represents the citizens’ freedom to express themselves, pursue their legitimate endeavors, and participate in governance through free and fair elections.
The PDP further accused the APC of neglecting Nigerians’ well-being, stating that the current government has returned the nation to a state of bondage, marked by economic hardship, corruption, and suppression of dissent.
The party lamented that the progress achieved under its administration—including improvements in democracy, personal freedoms, and investments in critical sectors like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and manufacturing—has been reversed by the APC, causing widespread suffering among Nigerians.
