Suspected rampaging herdsmen terrorising Nigeria’s middle belt have attacked Benue State killing at least nine people.
The victims, two soldiers and seven villagers, were killed when the herders attacked Eguma community in Agatu LGA of the State.
The head of Eguma community was among those killed during the attack which happened on Tuesday.
A former lawmaker who represented the LGA in the Benue State House of Assembly between 2011 to 2019, Audu Sule, confirmed the incident.
According to him, the suspected herdsmen attacked Eguma at 3:00 pm and started killing people.
He disclosed that two of the military personnel who responded to the distress call of the attack were killed by the suspected herdsmen.
The ex-lawmaker, who bemoaned the security threats his people faced daily, noted that the attack was the fourth on Eguma and Ogwule villages of Agatu LGA in the last month.
He explained that the military intervention led to a gun battle with the suspected herdsmen who fled after nine persons, including two soldiers, were killed.
The State Police Spokesperson, Sewuese Anene, has not issued a statement regarding the incident.
