...says REC is partisan.

  • Recall that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo had asked INEC to redeploy Anugbum Onuoha, the state’s REC, ahead of its September 21st governorship election.
  • Biodun Amosu, administrative secretary of INEC in Ondo, reiterated the commission’s commitment to free and fair elections.

Some residents in Ondo have demanded the immediate removal of Oluwatoyin Babalola as the resident electoral commissioner (REC) ahead of the state governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had scheduled the Ondo governorship election for November 16.

On Wednesday, youths staged a demonstration at the INEC office in Akure, the state’s capital — while accusing Babalola of “colluding” with some politicians.

They further alleged that the REC has been romancing a particular political party in the state.

Placards bearing different inscriptions like ‘We need a non partisan REC officer in Ondo” among others, were displayed during the protests.

Ijanusi Olawale, a protester, who spoke on behalf of the youths, accused the REC of unethical behavior, potentially compromising the integrity of the forthcoming election.

“The youths are demanding for free and fair election and we want INEC not to be bias, but transparent and ensure free and fair governorship election in the state,” NAN quoted Olawale as saying.

Reacting to the protesters’ concern, Biodun Amosu, administrative secretary of INEC in Ondo, reiterated the commission’s commitment to free and fair elections.

He assured the protesters that their concerns would be addressed to safeguard the electoral process.

“One thing we must confirm is that peaceful protest is allowed in our democracy— to us, you have not done anything bad. Thank you for being peaceful,” Amosu said.

“The allegations against the REC would be handled at the national headquarters of the electoral body.

“We have heard your demands, but we can assure you that once you have your agents in your polling booths, you protect your votes, nothing can happen

“And with the caliber of officers here, we can assure you, we will always work to ensure that your votes count.

“Please, cooperate with us, work with us, and let us work together. We will look at the various issues.

“The issue will be adequately attended to, but one thing that is important, votes will count in Ondo State.”
