Five individuals have been taken into custody by Ogun State police for their alleged involvement in the fatal assault of Segun Sikiru, a fisherman whose body was found in a lagoon in Iwopin town, Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area.

The suspects, all community members, are identified as Saheed Mureni, Afeez Mureni, Saheed Taidi, Thompson Samuel, and Ogoji Olorunwa.

Sikiru and his two sons had set out for a fishing trip when they stumbled upon suspicious activity at their fish trap.

The suspects, caught stealing from Sikiru’s trap, allegedly attacked him with a bamboo stick, striking him in the chest, while his sons managed to escape.

According to Omolola Odutola, police spokesperson, the arrest was made on Sunday by Abigi Police Division operatives following a family report.

Odutola stated, “When the deceased spotted them at his fish trap, he tried to raise the alarm and draw the attention of people in the area to what was happening.

“However, the suspects allegedly attacked him, striking him in the chest with a bamboo stick.

“Once they realised he had lost consciousness, they reportedly threw him into the lagoon.”

Odutola confirmed that Sikiru’s body has been recovered and taken to a mortuary in Ijebu-Ode, and an investigation is currently underway.
