Former Minister of Defence General Theophilus Danjuma has donated a state-of-the-art mortuary facility to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Jalingo in Taraba State. The multi-million naira project, commissioned by Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, is the first of its kind in the North East region.
The mortuary, funded by the TY Danjuma Foundation, was built to address the inadequate mortuary services at the hospital. It features advanced facilities, including a service and administrative area, a body reception and preparation unit, an autopsy area, and a body holding unit. The facility also boasts a 3-phase 20KVA standby generator, a 15KVA solar-powered inverter system, and a borehole with a filtration system to ensure a constant supply of electricity and clean water.
Speaking at the commissioning, General Danjuma revealed that he initiated the project after being disturbed by the poor condition of the existing morgue, following the death of his lawyer’s mother. He described how bodies were previously stored in an unrefrigerated shipping container, leading to rapid decomposition. He then directed his team to develop a modern mortuary facility with the best available amenities.
Danjuma urged the hospital management to maintain the facility and ensure its proper upkeep.
Dr. Bodiya Buma, the Taraba State Commissioner of Health, commended Danjuma’s generosity, highlighting that the new mortuary would enhance healthcare delivery, preserve dignity in death, and support medical research and training. Dr. Aisha Adamu, the Medical Director of FMC Jalingo, also expressed gratitude, stating that the facility had arrived at a critical time and would benefit future generations.
This intervention marks another contribution by the TY Danjuma Foundation towards improving the welfare and healthcare services in Taraba State.
