Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed his support for the Rivers State Local Government election, describing it as a vital expression of constitutional democracy.

Despite the withdrawal of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates from the race, Atiku commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s leadership for ensuring the elections took place.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Atiku stated, “Undoubtedly, this election resounds as a powerful affirmation of constitutionalism and the rule of law, a cause that should rally the support of all true champions of democracy.”

He emphasized the importance of upholding the people’s right to freely and fairly choose their leaders, calling on all believers in the democratic process to defend this right.

He noted that the local government elections, scheduled for Saturday, represent hope for Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and an opportunity to reinforce the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.

Atiku reaffirmed his belief in the sanctity of the democratic process, stating, “It is my unwavering conviction that the democratic process is sacred, and through it, the people must be empowered to shape their future by choosing their leaders in every local community.”
