The Kogi State Government has unveiled a 5-kilometre alternate route in Nyamanyama Village along the Ganaja-Ajaokuta Road to counter the effects of rising floodwaters.
The move, directed by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, aims to prevent travel disruptions on the main Ganaja Road, which is at risk of becoming impassable due to the swelling waters. The road is a critical link between Kogi and Nigeria’s South East and South-South regions.
“We are taking every step necessary to avoid hellish experiences on the roads,” Governor Ododo said.
Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Flood Disaster Response Team, Joel Salifu Oyibo, said the team acted swiftly to open the alternate route. Commissioner for Works, Mohammed Yusuf, praised the effort as an example of “responsive governance.”
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, described the flood situation as devastating, revealing that 75% of Ibaji Local Government Area is submerged, while the entire Kupa District and several communities are also underwater.
Fanwo called for Federal Government intervention, citing extensive property damage and losses in the state.
