The United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) has donated emergency response kits worth $69,075 to the Borno State Government in response to a recent cholera outbreak.
The outbreak, declared on October 4, 2024, has affected over 450 people across four local government areas, including MMC, Jere, Konduga, Mafa, and Monguno, with 17 confirmed cases.
During the presentation of the kits in Maiduguri, Dr. Rownak Khan, UNICEF’s Deputy Representative in Nigeria, highlighted Borno’s ongoing struggle with cholera, a recurring issue since 2009.
She reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting Borno State’s efforts to combat the disease through risk communication, hygiene promotion, the provision of safe water, cholera vaccination, and case management.
UNICEF’s donation includes 30 acute water diarrhoea kits (90 units) and 50 beds valued at $69,075, or approximately N113.3 million. Dr. Khan also mentioned that over 300,000 doses of oral cholera vaccines had already been administered in the state, with an additional 600,000 doses on the way.
The Borno State Government, represented by Dr. Abubakar Hassan, the Special Adviser on Health Matters, expressed gratitude to UNICEF for its swift response and acknowledged the long-standing partnership between the state and the organization.
The government assured the public that the donated items would be used efficiently to manage cholera cases and save lives.
