Gunmen launched a deadly assault on Ehime-Mbano Local Government Area on Tuesday, claiming the lives of several soldiers at the community’s army base.
This attack comes on the heels of another incident where suspected hoodlums razed the National Open University of Nigeria study center in Ezeoke Nsu, Ehime-Mbano, just a week prior.
The residence of Frank Ibezim, former Imo North senator, was also set ablaze by the attackers.
A viral video captured the gunmen chanting war songs as they torched operational vehicles.
“We are the angels. The angels are here. The army has run away. Why are they running? They should stand and face us,” they chanted.
“We are live at Ehime-Mbano army camp. Today is the 8th of October, we are the angels. We have come to take over.”
A community resident, who spoke to TheCable, recounted that the gunmen struck at approximately 8:30 pm on Tuesday.
“The gunmen invaded the Ehime-Mbano army camp and killed some soldiers. They also set on fire several operational vehicles in the camp,” the resident said.
“There is panic in our community. People are living in fear here. Gunmen have taken over our land. No one is safe anymore.
“Government should do something fast to save us.”
Imo police command spokesperson, Henry Okoye, stated that the command had yet to receive a briefing on the incident.
Onyema Nwachukwu, Nigerian Army spokesperson, was unavailable for immediate comment.
