Senator Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker from Kaduna Central, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other political leaders to make personal sacrifices to ease the burden of rising fuel prices.
On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) increased fuel prices nationwide. In Abuja, the price rose from N897 per liter to N1,030.
In Lagos, it went up from N855 to N998; in the North-East, it climbed to N1,070. Other regions saw similar hikes.
This price surge sparked outrage among Nigerians, with many urging Tinubu to reverse the increase. Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero questioned whether the administration was solely focused on increasing fuel costs.
Speaking at a Baptist Ministers Conference in Kaduna, Sani stressed that the poor should not bear the brunt of these economic hardships alone. He urged those in power, including the President, Ministers, and Governors, to lead by example through personal sacrifices.
Reverend Israel Akanji, President of the Nigerian Baptist Conference, supported Sani’s view.
He urged the government to slow down the pace of economic reforms and reduce fuel prices, as this would help ease the cost of living, particularly in areas like food, rent, and school fees.
Reverend Joseph Hayab, former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), highlighted that despite some progress in the fight against terrorism, the persistent issues of kidnapping and violence continue to plague the nation. He called on the government to act decisively to restore peace and security.
