The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the increasing loss of lives in Nigeria due to banditry and insecurity.
He lamented that the nation is gradually losing count of the number of citizens killed in violent attacks.
Obi shared his thoughts on Sunday via his X handle while reacting to last week’s tragic incident in which gunmen killed three members of the Supersport TV crew in Anambra State.
The victims were part of a group travelling to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to broadcast the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and Libya.
The crew was ambushed on Tuesday along the Ihiala-Orlu Road while en route from Lagos to Uyo. Out of the 14 individuals on board, eight were rescued, two managed to escape, three were killed, and one remains unaccounted for.
Obi expressed his sorrow, noting that the wave of killings, kidnappings, and violent crimes continues to worry many Nigerians. “The situation remains unchecked and worsens each day.
We are slowly losing track of the lives taken by insecurity in our country. Non-state actors have continued to bring grief to families, whose loved ones are often kidnapped and killed in horrific ways,” he said.
He strongly condemned the ambush on the Supersport crew members and also highlighted a recent attack in Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State, where several people were killed or injured.
“These violent attacks, many of which go unreported, have now become part of our daily existence in what was once a secure nation. How much longer will we let our people perish before saying enough is enough?”
Obi extended his condolences to the families affected by these recent attacks and prayed for the souls of the departed, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery. He also emphasized that the issue of national security is a collective responsibility and urged continuous efforts to ensure the protection of lives and property.
In a separate message on Sunday, Obi offered his heartfelt condolences to former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, NNPC Group CEO Mele Kyari, and former Women Affairs Minister Dame Pauline Tallen, over the recent deaths of their children.
“My deepest sympathies go out to these families. Losing young, promising children is a pain that’s unimaginable. The void left by their departure will undoubtedly be felt, but we must trust in the will of the Almighty,” Obi stated, praying for divine comfort for the bereaved families.
