Nigeria’s House of Representatives has urged President Bola Tinubu’s government to reverse recent price hikes for petrol and cooking gas, citing the financial burden on citizens.
Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda (PDP-Rivers) raised the motion, stressing the need for relief measures like subsidies or tax reductions to help low-income households.
He warned that rising fuel and gas prices, driven by the removal of subsidies, global oil fluctuations, and the naira’s depreciation, are worsening inflation and pushing many Nigerians into deeper hardship.
Chinda also highlighted the strain on small businesses, with higher operational costs threatening jobs and economic stability. Lawmakers called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to expedite refinery repairs to reduce reliance on imported fuel.
The House also urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to implement policies to ease inflationary pressures and encouraged both federal and state governments to explore renewable energy alternatives and adopt measures to lessen the economic strain on citizens.
