The Imo state police command has announced the dismantling of a notorious robbery gang plaguing Owerri North LGA.

In a statement, the command spokesperson, Henry Okoye, revealed that operatives acted on a tip, leading to the arrest of a suspect named Moses Nanzi.

Okoye said that a gun battle ensued between officers and suspects, resulting in one fatality;

Nanzi was injured and a double-barrel gun with seven live cartridges seized.

“On October 15, 2024, at 3:20 AM, Owerri North Divisional Headquarters patrol team swiftly responded to a Dominion Street, Don Kay, armed robbery distress call,” the statement reads.

“Upon arrival, police encountered armed robbers who opened fire; officers showcased bravery, strategically repositioned, and returned fire effectively.

“During the confrontation, one suspect was neutralized; Moses Nanzi, 31, from Plateau’s Farin Gada, was injured and arrested.

“Fleeing gang members escaped into nearby bushes; a double-barrel gun and seven live rounds were recovered from Nanzi.”

Okoye said a search is ongoing for escaped suspects, and once investigations conclude, the arrested individual will face full prosecution.
