Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has urged North-Central governors to work together in combating the increasing problem of drug abuse and trafficking.
Speaking at the opening of a two-day sensitization workshop in Lafia, organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Narcotics for youth and women, Governor Sule emphasized the need for collective commitment, sacrifices, and a strong legal framework to address the issue.
He highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse on the nation’s survival.
Sule expressed concern over the rising involvement of women in drug abuse, given their crucial role in families and society.
He praised the efforts of the House of Representatives, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Ministry of Women Affairs, and traditional leaders, noting that their combined efforts were yielding positive results in reducing insecurity linked to drug use.
The governor reaffirmed his dedication to leading the fight for a drug-free society. He raised concerns about the potential consequences of drug abuse in more populated states if left unchecked in states with smaller populations.
Chairman of the House Committee on Narcotics, Abass Adigun, emphasized the urgency of addressing the growing drug crisis in Nigeria and assured that the House would continue its efforts to combat the issue. He called for support from other government branches and organizations.
Nasarawa State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Rufai Ibrahim, commended the collaboration of stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse, stating that the workshop would help educate women and youth on the dangers of drug use and its negative effects on both individual and societal development.
