Flood in Kogi
  • NEMA has deployed mobile water purification equipment to provide clean water for the displaced families

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has dispatched its emergency response team to Kogi State to address widespread flooding that has submerged over 200 communities and displaced nearly two million residents.

In a statement on Wednesday, NEMA said the team, specialized in search and rescue operations, will support the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency and other local stakeholders in evacuation and relief efforts.

Affected local governments include Kogi, Lokoja, Adavi, Ofu, Ajaokuta, Idah, and Ibaji.

According to NEMA, as of October 14, 2024, the flood disaster has affected 1,659 people, displaced 517, and damaged 1,601 houses.

To mitigate the crisis, NEMA has deployed mobile water purification equipment to provide clean water for the displaced families.

NEMA Director-General Zubaida Umar had earlier warned flood-prone states to prepare for potential incidents. The agency has activated zonal offices and prepositioned critical equipment for search and rescue operations in states at high risk, including Kogi, Benue, Delta, Anambra, and Rivers.

NEMA is also coordinating with the Military Disaster Response Units, police, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society to deploy additional personnel and resources. Umar urged residents in flood-prone areas, particularly along the Rivers Benue and Niger, to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency services.
