Irate commercial motorcyclists kill police officer in Lagos

A yet-to-be identified officer of the Lagos State Police Command has been killed by a mob in Lagos State.

The deceased, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), met his end after he was attacked by commercial motorcyclists also known as Okada riders.

The tragic incident happened in the Agege area of the state on Saturday morning.

Matters came to a head when the deceased led a team of policemen to an accident scene at WEMCO junction by Mobil road, Agege, only to be attacked and killed by the motorcyclist.

It was learnt that the policemen had gone to evacuate a truck that knocked down an Okada rider but met vehement opposition from the riders who insisted that they must set the truck on fire.

Spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

He described the killing as unprovoked, adding that five people have been arrested.

Hundeyin said the team got a distress call at about 1.40am on Saturday about an an accident that involved an Okada rider and a trailer.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that it was the rider that ran into the trailer and died in the process.

“On getting to the scene, the team met a large number of motorcycle riders who haf gathered around the place. However, the patrol team in the process of evacuating the truck came under attack by the riders who insisted on torching the truck as a result of which one ASP, 46 years old was injured on the head and he died on the spot while the truck driver escaped.

“Five suspects have since been arrested and manhunt for other is on.”
