  • The Federal Government of Nigeria directed the NFF to withdraw the Super Eagles from the match to avoid any unforeseen danger

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has stated that it has already submitted all relevant documents to the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Disciplinary Committee in order to prosecute its case against the Libya Football Federation.

It should be noted that the NFF pulled the Super Eagles out of the return leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Libya on Monday, citing the sudden and ‘forceful’ diversion of the plane transporting the Nigerian delegation to Al Abraq Airport rather than Benghazi, where they were originally headed, and the subsequent detention of the visitors at the same airport for nearly 20 hours without food or water.

Due to the tensed atmosphere that ensued, the Federal Government of Nigeria directed the NFF to withdraw the Super Eagles from the match to avoid any unforeseen danger.

However, even before the decision to boycott the match was taken, the NFF had filed a protest to CAF, demanding justice from the continental football governing body.

First, CAF responded by stating categorically that the treatment meted to the Nigerian delegation was not only despicable but totally unacceptable.

It followed up with the directive that both countries should submit latest October 20, the relevant documents, explaining in details the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the October 15 AFCON qualifying match.

When Weekend Trust contacted a top official of the NFF yesterday, he said, “We have already submitted all the relevant documents for the attention of the disciplinary committee.

“Even before we returned to Nigeria, we were ready with everything needed to prosecute our case against Libya. So, we have done what is expected of us.

“Right now, we are only waiting for the verdict,” he said.

When asked to throw more light on the pleas of the NFF to CAF, he simply said, “No need to go into details, let’s wait and see the outcome.”
