The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have joined forces to tackle cybersecurity challenges by engaging and harnessing the creativity of young people in the West African region.
This partnership was highlighted during the third regional security hackathon in Abuja, Nigeria, which attracted participants from 12 West African countries. Winners and participants were awarded cash prizes and gift items for their efforts and achievements.
Speaking at the event, NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, represented by Oladejo Olawumi, explained that the hackathon aimed to identify and nurture cybersecurity experts capable of addressing the growing threat of cybercrime in the region.
He emphasized the importance of harnessing the potential of young people to confront these challenges.
He stressed the need for countries in the region to adhere to cybersecurity regulations and implement robust measures to safeguard critical institutions.
Olawumi noted that by tapping into the region’s youthful talent, NITDA is helping to combat cybercrime and prevent young people from becoming involved in criminal activities.
He praised the vibrant competition within the technology sector and reiterated NITDA’s commitment to supporting future initiatives.
Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, also highlighted the urgency of protecting the region’s cyberspace and emphasized the hackathon’s role in identifying and supporting talented individuals.
He acknowledged the successful collaboration between ECOWAS, NITDA, governments, the private sector, and academia in making the event successful.
