  • The Nigerian government plans to make solar energy accessible and affordable by next year, aiming to address the country’s power supply challenges
  • Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi emphasized the need for 40,000 megawatts to stabilize electricity supply, significantly higher than the current capacity

The Federal Government has announced plans to make solar energy accessible and affordable to all Nigerians by next year. Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General/CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, revealed this during an interview with BBC Hausa.

Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that Nigeria requires 40,000 megawatts to achieve stable power supply, far beyond the current installed capacity of 12,000 megawatts, of which only 5,000 megawatts are delivered to consumers.

To address this shortfall, the government has introduced a national energy master plan to resolve the country’s energy challenges and ensure widespread access to electricity.

As part of this initiative, a plant to produce solar panels and batteries will be established, providing affordable solar energy to Nigerians. Dr. Abdullahi assured that this goal will be achieved by next year.
