Nigeria Aims for Affordable Solar Energy Access by Next Year

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General/CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria

The Federal Government has announced plans to make solar energy accessible and affordable to all Nigerians by next year. Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General/CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, revealed this during an interview with BBC Hausa.

Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that Nigeria requires 40,000 megawatts to achieve stable power supply, far beyond the current installed capacity of 12,000 megawatts, of which only 5,000 megawatts are delivered to consumers.

To address this shortfall, the government has introduced a national energy master plan to resolve the country’s energy challenges and ensure widespread access to electricity.

As part of this initiative, a plant to produce solar panels and batteries will be established, providing affordable solar energy to Nigerians. Dr. Abdullahi assured that this goal will be achieved by next year.

Additionally, the government has begun constructing a Renewable Energy College, where free education on energy will be offered to help close the gap in the power sector and support the government’s broader efforts to improve energy access.

Nigeria is currently grappling with an energy crisis, marked by frequent collapses of the national grid
