The European Union, through the UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), is working to build capacity in Nigeria’s climate sector to address methane emissions.

This was revealed during a workshop in Abuja, led by Ms. Marci Paranski, Programme Manager at IMEO, as part of Nigeria’s Emissions Reduction Programme.

The EU-funded project aims to establish a national methane emissions baseline, focusing on the oil and gas, agriculture, and waste sectors.

The three-year initiative includes training civil servants, private sector professionals, and scientists to tackle methane emissions.

Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, Director-General of Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change, praised the government’s commitment to reducing methane emissions by 2030.
