The Amaokai Ugwueke community in Abia’s Bende council area pleaded with Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North senatorial zone, on Monday to assist them with the Orie – Amaokai Ugwueke market road, which he began in the area before embarking on a new one-kilometer road project that he also attracted to the community.

Despite not opposing the new road, the community pleaded with him to rehabilitate and connect it to the market road, which he also brought to the area, adding, “We need solid and quality road construction in the Amaokai community.” The Amaokai bridge, among others, has collapsed due to flooding.

According to the Vice President of Amaokai Ugwueke Development Union (AUDU), Mr. Sunday Obiokpara, it will be in the best interest of the community to link the 300 metre road to the new one kilometer road.

Commending the senator for his love for the community, they urged him to link the two roads to ease the sufferings of the people, pleading “What we are saying is that we are not rejecting the new one kilometer road he attracted, but since Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu is one who attracted the first road leading from Orie market to Amaokai Ugwueke which is about 300 metres, we are pleading with him to link the two roads because only this will benefit the community.

“The truth of the matter is that the good works of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in Ugwueke cannot be over-emphasized. But our only plea and cry is that there is an existing work that has been done by the Senator from Afia Orie going to Amaokai Ugwueke.

“Your Excellency, we beg you to start this rehabilitation work from the other end rather than starting it from this end.

“This is our only cry because the road did not go far.  Amaokai has a very long distance to enter from the road. Help us by starting from the 300 meters and link it with the 1 kilometer road you want to start.”

Earlier, the traditional ruler of the community and President General of the Amaokai Ugwueke Development Union, AUDU, Eze Gilbert Nwafor Chukwu and Bishop Stephen Iheukwumere Okpara respectively, said the had written a letter to the senator, asking him to link the two roads and expressed their hope of partnering with him to take the community to enviable heights.

“As a community, we request that this current 1 km road should be added to the existing road construction which you started from Afia Orie. It will be good if the 1 km road should be added to the old one rather than starting a new one,” the traditional ruler and the President General pleaded.
