- Dr Oyebanji emphasized the importance of early breast cancer screening to prevent the disease
Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, the wife of Ekiti State Governor, has selected 200 women from various local governments in the state for free mammograms and breast scans.
This initiative was announced on Wednesday during a Breast Cancer Awareness programme at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, in commemoration of the 2024 Breast Cancer Awareness Day, themed “No One Should Face Breast Cancer Alone.”
Dr Oyebanji emphasized the importance of early breast cancer screening to prevent the disease from progressing, offering free scans to 150 women aged 18 to 40, and mammogram examinations to 50 women aged 40 and above. She called for increased awareness and urged religious, market, and political female leaders to champion the campaign.
She also commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his efforts in the health sector, particularly for providing a mammogram machine at the Adunni Olayinka Women Diagnostic and Wellness Centre.
Dr Julius Olaogun, Associate Professor of General Surgery at EKSUTH, underscored the importance of early detection and healthy habits like balanced diets and exercise in reducing cancer risks. He assured that cancer is preventable and urged women to perform monthly breast self-examinations.
Additionally, two breast cancer survivors shared their experiences, stressing how early detection saved their lives and encouraging women to prioritize regular breast examinations.
