The Ekiti State Government has warned herders against allowing their livestock to damage farms, threatening legal action to protect its agricultural sector.

Ebenezer Ogundana, a retired Brigadier General and Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, issued the warning during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Ekiti State Farmers/Herders Peace Committee in Ado Ekiti.

He emphasized that herders found grazing at night or using underage shepherds would face prosecution.

Ogundana, who chairs the committee, highlighted that the group was established by Governor Abiodun Oyebanji in 2023 to end farmer-herder clashes. He pointed to measures such as the state’s anti-grazing law, which bans night grazing, underage herding, and livestock encroachment on farmland.

To improve coordination, 18 local government representatives have been appointed to foster better cooperation between herders, farmers, and host communities.
