Omoyele Sowore, Sahara Reporters’ publisher, has accused some Igbo elites of complicity in Nnamdi Kanu’s prolonged detention.
He said that Kanu’s incarceration proves “Nigeria has an Igbo problem,” showcasing post-civil war marginalization.
Speaking on 90Minutes Africa, Sowore stated, “Nigeria has an Igbo problem. It’s like when a father is dying, they will tell their children, I have a problem with Igbo people; please continue from there.”
Sowore expressed disappointment in President Bola Tinubu’s administration for not releasing Kanu.
“I expected Tinubu’s first act to be Kanu’s release. But the worsening situation indicates conspiracy,” he added.
“Some Igbo elites are complicit in Kanu’s detention, previously insisting on delaying release discussions until after elections.”
Kanu has been detained since 2021, facing treasonable felony charges.
The federal high court granted bail in 2017 but revoked it due to non-compliance.
In April 2022, eight charges were dropped, and the court of appeal quashed remaining counts, ordering Kanu’s release.
However, the court granted a stay of execution on October 28, 2022, following the federal government’s supreme court appeal.
Kanu was denied bail in March and May.
