The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria a 3-0 victory and three points in their 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya.
The decision, announced on Saturday, comes after the Nigerian national team endured substantial logistical challenges during their trip for the second leg of the qualifier.
The Super Eagles faced redirected flights, over 18 hours of delays, and significant transportation issues, having won the first leg 1-0 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe addressed the matter following the 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, emphasizing that African football’s governing body would not condone such treatment of visiting teams.
Motsepe remarked, “We will not tolerate such incidents, as this has been an ongoing problem. Our goal is to ensure fairness and respect in all competitions.”
Motsepe cited the investigation, confirming that appropriate action had been taken.
He condemned instances where visiting teams endure prolonged waits at airports and face unnecessary document scrutiny. Libya was fined $50,000, reinforcing CAF’s stance on fair and respectful treatment of all national teams in African football.
