The President of the National Medical Association (NMA), Bala Audu, has expressed concern over the ongoing brain drain in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, urging government intervention to address the issue.
Speaking during a press conference to mark the 2024 National Physicians’ Week in Ibadan, Audu, represented by the Oyo State NMA Chairman, Happy Adedapo, called for the uniform implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure across all levels of government. He stressed that inconsistent pay and delayed salary upgrades are key factors driving the exodus of health professionals.
Audu argued that fair and equitable remuneration is essential to retain talent and ensure the strength of the healthcare system. “When healthcare workers are compensated fairly, they feel valued and respected, which enhances their dedication to patient care,” he said.
He highlighted the disparities in pay structures across various institutions and locations, which he said discourages young professionals from remaining in the country. Audu urged leaders to invest in the health sector, noting that fair remuneration is crucial if Nigeria is to compete globally for healthcare talent.
“The loss of our brightest minds to countries offering better pay and conditions is a threat we cannot ignore,” he warned, calling for a national commitment to improving working conditions and healthcare infrastructure.
